This browser can’t compress video yet. It needs WebCodecs, which recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on a computer have. Firefox on Android doesn’t. Try another browser, or use the photo compressor.

        Short answer

Without Nitro, Discord lets you upload files up to 20 MB, up from 10 MB until August 2026, and Discord checks the size of the original file before it does any compressing of its own. The Discord 20 MB limit is still too small for most phone videos. Drop your video above, keep the Discord preset and download an MP4 of about 19 MB.

How to compress a video for Discord

        1. Choose the video

Pick the clip you want to share. Phone videos, screen recordings and game clips in MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV all work, and the file stays on your device while it is compressed.

        2. Keep the Discord preset

The size is already set to 20 MB, the limit without Nitro since August 2026, and the tool aims for about 19 MB. Guides that tell you to compress a video to 10 MB for Discord are out of date, and 10 MB is now a size for strict work email: compress video to 10 MB.

        3. Compress

Press Compress video. The plan on screen shows the expected size before you start. Your browser re-encodes the clip as H.264 with AAC sound, and if the first pass is over the target, the tool lowers the bitrate, then the resolution or frame rate, and runs again until the file fits.

        4. Upload it to Discord

Download the MP4 and add it to a message with the plus button, on desktop, in the browser or on your phone. MP4 with H.264 video is one of the formats Discord lists for uploads.

Discord file size limit: with and without Nitro

The Discord file size limit without Nitro is 20 MB, and Discord says the figure is measured on the original file, before any compression. Desktop has always worked that way, and since August 2026 mobile does too. Discord also notes that it is experimenting with upload limits, so some accounts may see a larger number than the ones below.

        Account Limit What counts
Without Nitro 20 MB The size of the file you upload, checked before Discord compresses it
Nitro Basic 50 MB The size of the file you upload
Nitro Up to 1 GB The size of the file you upload

        Questions about Discord and video

How to compress a video for Discord on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari on your iPhone, choose the video from your photo library, keep the Discord preset and press Compress video. Keep the page open until the download is ready, then pick the MP4 in Discord. Your original stays in Photos.

Why is my iPhone video too big for Discord?

Because Discord checks the original file, not a smaller version it makes later. Apple estimates 70 to 105 MB for a minute of 1080p video, so even a short clip usually starts well over 20 MB. Make the smaller copy first and upload that. The plan on screen shows the expected size before you start, so you know the file will pass.

Is the Discord 10 MB file limit still in place?

No. Discord raised the limit without Nitro from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. Pages that still say 10 MB describe the old figure. The compressor above uses the current limit and aims for about 19 MB, a size that also suits iCloud Mail and the Outlook app: compress video to 20 MB.

What is the Discord video size limit?

Discord gives one upload limit and none that is specific to video, so a video is a file like any other. Without Nitro you get 20 MB, with Nitro Basic 50 MB, and with Nitro up to 1 GB, according to Discord’s help center. The 50 MB size has a page of its own: compress video to 50 MB.

How long can a video be on Discord without Nitro?

Discord’s help page sets a size limit and no maximum length, so what counts is how many megabytes the video takes. At the 20 MB size, good quality holds about 33 seconds at 1080p, 1 minute 12 seconds at 720p or 2 minutes 34 seconds at 480p. The tool picks the sharpest resolution that still fits, and the video size calculator shows it for any length.

        Does Discord compress videos?

Discord checks the size of the original file first, before any compression of its own, on desktop and on mobile. So the file you pick has to be under 20 MB on its own: make the smaller copy here, then upload it.

Can I compress a video for Discord on mobile?

Yes. On an iPhone use Safari, on Android use Chrome. Discord says Android users may hit the limit more often than before, because source files tend to be larger there and are now checked before compression, so Android is a good place to make the smaller copy first.

Is my video uploaded when I compress it?

No. The video is converted in your browser, on your own device, and is never sent to a server. Compression does cost some quality, so play the result before you download it.
