        Short answer

No video compressor keeps every detail, so you cannot compress video without losing quality altogether: a smaller file always means some loss. What you can do is keep the loss small enough that it hardly shows on a phone screen. To compress video with minimal quality loss, keep Balanced selected above, which holds the picture at up to 1080p and 30 frames per second and sets no size target, or choose the largest size your limit allows. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to reduce video size without losing quality you would notice

        1. Choose the video

Pick the MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. The tool never changes the original: it makes a new file, so you can always go back to the first one.

        2. Keep Balanced selected

On this page the tool opens with Balanced, which sets no size target. The picture stays at up to 1080p and up to 30 frames per second, at a bitrate that suits its size. It is the right choice when you want a smaller file and have no limit to meet.

        3. Or pick the largest size your limit allows

When a service sets a limit, choose that size and not a smaller one. The closer the size is to the original, the less is lost, and the tool aims a little under the limit so the file still fits. To make video smaller without losing quality you would notice, give it as much room as the limit allows.

        4. Check the plan, compress, then play the result

The plan on screen shows a warning when the size is tight for the length of the video. That is the moment to choose a larger size. After compressing, play the preview before you download. If it looks softer than you like, go back and choose a larger size.

How much data good quality needs

The tool calls a picture good quality when it gets at least 0.07 bits per pixel at 30 frames per second, plus 96 kbit/s for the sound. When a size is too small for that, the tool lowers the resolution, and if needed the frame rate, instead of leaving a blocky picture, and the plan warns you. To reduce video file size without losing quality that shows, check what each resolution needs. The video size calculator turns these figures into minutes for any size.

Resolution Data for good quality Size per minute of video
        1080p About 4.45 Mbit/s About 33 MB
        720p About 2.0 Mbit/s About 15 MB
        480p About 0.96 Mbit/s About 7.2 MB

        Questions about quality

        Does compressing video reduce quality?

Yes, by a little or by a lot, depending on how much you take away. The tool encodes the video again, and every encode discards the detail the eye notices least. At a sensible size the loss is small on a phone screen. At a very small size it is not, and the plan warns you before you start.

Can you compress video files without losing quality?

Not entirely. A file made much smaller has lost something, because the video is encoded again as H.264, which discards detail. What you control is how much. Three things matter most: a larger size, Balanced instead of a tight target, and a shorter video, because a size limit is a budget of bits for the whole video.

How to compress video and keep quality?

Give it room. Keep Balanced selected, or choose the largest size your limit allows. A 30-second clip can look good in 10 MB, and a 10-minute video cannot. For email, compress video to 25 MB is the roomiest of the standard sizes.

        What is lossless video compression?

Lossless compression keeps every pixel exactly as it was, and the file stays far larger than one made to fit an email or chat limit. A lossless video compressor is therefore no help when you have a size to meet. This tool makes a lossy H.264 MP4, which is what lets it reach a size, and it lowers the resolution before it leaves a blocky picture.

Can I compress video without losing resolution?

Only if the size allows it. When the size is tight, resolution is the first thing to go: the tool lowers the picture size, for example to 720p. With Balanced the picture stays at up to 1080p, so a video at 1080p or smaller keeps its resolution.

Can I compress 4K video without losing quality?

Balanced keeps the picture at up to 1080p, so a 4K video comes out at 1080p at most: fewer pixels than the original, in a much smaller file. For a size target the tool picks the largest picture size that still has good quality at that size. To scale a 4K video down on purpose, see convert 4K video to 1080p.

Does compressing video reduce audio quality?

A little. The sound is encoded again as AAC, and when a size is very tight the tool gives it less room so the picture keeps more. If the browser cannot read the sound in a file, the copy has no sound, and the tool tells you.

Is my video uploaded when I compress it?

No. The video is converted in your browser, on your own device, and is never sent to a server. Play the result before you download it, and keep the original until you are happy with the copy. More about the tool is on the video compressor online page.
