This browser can’t compress video yet. It needs WebCodecs, which recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on a computer have. Firefox on Android doesn’t. Try another browser, or use the photo compressor.

        Short answer

The Gmail total attachment limit is 25 MB per email on a personal account, so most videos filmed on a phone are too large to attach. To compress a video for Gmail, drop it above, keep the Gmail preset and download an MP4 of about 24 MB. It attaches to your email like any other file.

How to shrink video size for Gmail attachments

        1. Choose the video

Pick the video you want to send. Videos from an iPhone, an Android phone or a camera all work, and you can compress an MP4 for Gmail as easily as a MOV. The file never leaves your device while it is compressed.

        2. Keep the Gmail preset

The size is already set for Gmail’s 25 MB limit. The tool aims for about 24 MB, so the file stays under the limit with a little room to spare. The plan and the expected size are on screen before you start.

        3. Compress

Press Compress video to reduce the video size for Gmail. Your browser re-encodes it, and if a pass lands over the target, the tool lowers the bitrate or the resolution and runs again until the file fits. Keep the tab open while it works; a long video takes longer.

        4. Attach it in Gmail

Download the MP4 and attach it as usual. A video that was too large for Gmail now goes out as a regular attachment that plays in any mail app. If you attach other files to the same email, their sizes count toward the same 25 MB.

        Gmail attachment size limit

The Gmail max attachment size is 25 MB for a personal account. It covers the total size of everything attached to one email, not each file on its own, so two 15 MB clips already add up to more than Gmail allows. Work and school accounts follow the limit their administrator sets. Other providers differ, and all the email attachment size limits are on one page.

        Questions about Gmail and video

How big of a file can you send through Gmail?

Up to 25 MB per email on a personal account. That is Gmail’s maximum attachment size for everything you attach together, not per file. If you send from the Outlook app with your Gmail address, the app’s own 20 MB limit applies instead; see how to compress video for Outlook.

How do I send a video in Gmail over 25 MB?

Make a smaller copy first. To compress video size for Gmail, choose the video above, keep the Gmail preset and download the result. It comes out at about 24 MB and attaches like any other file. The same size suits Yahoo Mail and Outlook.com on the web too: see how to compress video to 25 MB. Long videos may need a lower resolution to fit; the tool does that for you and tells you if a video is too long to fit at all.

Why is my video too large for Gmail?

Your attachments add up to more than 25 MB, and Gmail counts every file in the email together. A minute of HD video recorded on a phone is usually several times that size, so even short clips go over the limit. Compressing the video to under 25 MB solves it.

How long a video can you send through Gmail?

It depends on the quality. At good quality, 25 MB holds about 41 seconds at 1080p, 1 minute 31 seconds at 720p or 3 minutes 14 seconds at 480p. The tool picks the sharpest resolution that still fits, and a longer video is scaled down further.

Can I compress an iPhone video for Gmail?

Yes. iPhone videos, MOV or MP4, compress here in Safari or in a recent Chrome or Edge, and the result is an MP4 that Gmail accepts. Some browsers cannot open the HEVC video iPhones record, and the tool says so if yours cannot. On an iPhone, keep the page open until the download is ready.

Is my video uploaded when I compress it?

No. The video is processed in your browser, on your own device. It is never sent to a server, so you also skip the wait for an upload.

Is the Gmail Workspace attachment size limit different at work or school?

Work and school accounts run on Google Workspace, where the administrator sets the attachment limits. If your organization’s limit is lower than 25 MB, enter it as your own size in the tool. A strict work server may need less still; see how to compress video to 10 MB.

Will the video look worse after compression?

Compression always trades some quality for size. At 25 MB a clip of up to 41 seconds keeps good quality at 1080p, and one of up to 1 minute 31 seconds at 720p; longer clips are scaled down so they fit. You can play the result before you download it, and your original is never changed.
